Reflections on Guy Kawasaki: Make Meaning in your Company

Our professor told us to watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQs6IpJQWXc Guy Kawasaki: Make Meaning in your Company. This video was presented by Guy last October 20, 2004 for the Stanford Technology Ventures Program Educators Corner in the School of Engineering at Stanford University. The video talks about the art to start a company and how to be successful with your company.

Who is Guy Kawasaki? In his website link http://www.guykawasaki.com/about/ , Guy Kawasaki is the co-founder of Alltop.com which is an online magazine rack of popular topics on the web. He is the founding partner at Garage Technology Ventures and previously the chief evangelist of Apple. Guy Kawasaki is the authored ten books which includes The Start of the Art and The Macintosh Way.  He is an employee of the Apple and one who is originally responsible for marketing the Macintosh. After he finished his work at Apple, he left to start a Macintosh database company called ACIUS and published the great database, 4th Dimension. He also started another software company called the Fog City Software where he is one who created an email product called Emailer. After he left Apple, he started to invest at Garage.com and became a venture capitalist where he raises money for those who want to become entrepreneurs. Currently, he was the Managing Director of Garage Technology Ventures that makes direct investments in an early stage technology companies.

What was the video about? From its title “Make meaning in your company”, it deals on how you value your company. Being an entrepreneur is not about earning money and become rich but on how you make meaning to it. According to Guy, the core and the essence of the entrepreneurship is about making meaning to it.  We all know that many people now are starting to build their own businesses just to earn money but they do not realize that putting a business without meaning will probably not become successful. I quote what Guy Kawasaki said “If you make meaning, you probably make money but if you set out to make money you will probably not make meaning and you won’t make money.”, absolutely true.

In his video he shares about The Art of the Start to make meaning in your company. A technopreneur must have the thought to make meaning which are to increase the quality of life, right a wrong and prevent the end of something good. Why we need to increase the quality of life? Of course, as an entrepreneur you must motivated to change the world, to make the world a better place. According to him when they make the first Macintosh revision of the Apple Computer they are not motivated to make money, they only motivated by changing the world to make people more creative and more productive. As a technopreneur you must consider what the people wants and how they will increase the quality of their lives. It is not just by creating something but you make meaning into actions.

How to right a wrong? If you find something that it was wrong, then you probably try to fix it. Nobody is perfect, everyone commit mistakes or get wrong but there is always a solution to make a right a wrong. If you are an employee of a certain company and you feel something wrong behind the company, you must not act that you do not see something or you must not shut up but rather you think of an idea what should be done in order to fix it. It is not a problem to right a wrong but it is only to correct things for the betterment of all involved in a certain problem. You must think of the idea to do what is right and to make the right from wrong. Being an entrepreneur you will think of an idea and make an innovation to help what people wants to fix.

Will you prevent the end of something good? if you know things has been ruined you probably want to end this but if you know that something good is happening you probably does not want to end it rather to continue and create innovations. We all know that it is not wrong to make new things, you only believe something good will happen for the sake and for the good of all on how you will change the world. The technopreneur innovating ideas from what they had observed problem in the community, the nation and the world. if you are really good of doing something good, you think of not to end with it but rather continue making it and create new ideas to make it better. What Guy tells about this is if you want to change the world to make it a better place, do not limit yourself, your capacity of thinking new ideas and do not forget to make meaning to it.

According to Guy “If you start your company, please use one or more motivation and rethinks what you are doing.”, it is necessary to think what are the ideas you are creating with your company. You do not have to make company if you just only want to make money and become rich but when you want to start a company, of being a technopreneur, you must make meaning of the ideas and the actions you are to make. If you make meaning in your company, you probably earn money, help the people lives and you will change the world for a better place. The good qualities you have does not help the company but how you take passion of what you do, the meaning you into it, the actions that you believe it is right then your company will be successful. The secret to become a successful technopreneur is to make meaning in your company. Make meaning is to make money and to change the world.

I will ask you, how will you challenge yourself to make meaning in your company?
